Summer Action Item: DOMA repeal

SUMMER ACTION ITEM for persons of faith, RUM's and friends:

Thanks to Judy Sandeen of Hastings PFLAG -  Hastings, NE for sharing this Action:

Act today!

Become a Citizen Co-Sponsor of our DOMA-repeal legislation at WeRespectMarriage.com. <http://leahy.convio.net/site/R?i=KmCxC0X079r8vnm4z5bF2g..>

What an historic day.

Just yesterday, we chaired the first-ever congressional hearing focused on repealing the discriminatory /Defense of Marriage Act/ (DOMA), bringing us even closer to restoring the rights of all lawfully married couples to receive the full benefits of marriage under federal law.

Now, on the heels of our successful hearing, we're rallying the American people to join the 145 congressional co-sponsors who are on the record in support of repealing DOMA, in an effort to win over the support of our colleagues who are still on the fence.

*We respect marriage -- for all Americans, including same-sex couples. Will you stand with us?*

*Click here to sign on as a Citizen Co-sponsor of our DOMA-repeal legislation at WeRespectMarriage.com.* <http://leahy.convio.net/site/R?i=Jgn8aSJRRSqzsB2_htG2Kw..>

We've got lots of momentum behind us.

In fact, a majority of Americans -- 53 percent -- now believe same-sex couples deserve the same right to marry as everybody else.

So when the Obama administration announced it would no longer defend the discriminatory /Defense of Marriage Act/ (DOMA) in federal court earlier this year, we went a step further and co-sponsored the /Respect for Marriage Act/ to completely repeal DOMA -- which President Obama officially endorsed.

Then, just last month, this growing public acceptance -- and the persistence of the pro-equality community -- persuaded a bipartisan majority of legislators in New York to approve same-sex marriage legislation, after previously rejecting it.

Nevertheless, until we repeal DOMA, federal law will continue treating gays and lesbians unequally. *That's wrong -- and we need to do something about it.*

*Click here to sign on as a Citizen Co-sponsor of our DOMA-repeal legislation at WeRespectMarriage.com.* <http://leahy.convio.net/site/R?i=ynYD6EYoJG48GmJLl49LXA..>

Justice delayed is justice denied, and for those lawfully wedded same-sex couples who have been denied the full federal recognition we both enjoy in our own marriages, the /Respect for Marriage Act/ is long, long overdue.

That’s why -- even if you’ve already contacted Congress or spoken out against DOMA -- it would mean so much if we could publicly list your name as a Citizen Co-sponsor of our legislation to right this terrible wrong.

*Click here to sign on as a Citizen Co-sponsor of our DOMA-repeal legislation at WeRespectMarriage.com.* <http://leahy.convio.net/site/R?i=qm-s37NQAz8nUkXeDPoz1g..>

It's often said that the wheels of justice grind slowly, but we're teaming up to pick up the pace.

We hope you’ll join with us.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator

Chris Coons
U.S. Senator

Subject: Send individual and/or group petitions

As you know, the 2011 Kansas East Annual Conference overwhelmingly approved the WIGW-KC request to Amend ¶161.F in the Book of Discipline so it will be sent on to General Conference!

In addition, any group or individual in the United Methodist church can send a petition to General Conference and we think the impact would be greater if as many people as possible also submitted the petition.  A copy of the petition and instructions for submitting it are attached to this email.

You can download the petition, fill in the needed information, and then email as instructed by September 27 or send through USPS by July 1st.  I sent mine this morning and got a confirmation that it has been received.
The following people were elected in KS East Annual Conference - as our delegates to General Conference and will be voting on this petition as well as others:
Adam Hamilton, Church of the Resurrection, clergy

Join your voice with retired bishops and other faithful United Methodists in support of removing anti-gay discrimination in our ordination policies!

When the full Bishop's Council cannot clearly name the concern in its response to these retired bishops, we must take action to help them believe out loud.  Unclear silence cannot be the voice of our spiritual leaders.
  1. Encourage Your Active Bishop to sign on to the Retired Bishop's Statement
  2. Encourage Your Pastor to sign on support for the Retired Bishop's Statement
  3. Encourage Laity to sign on support for the Retired Bishop's Statement
  4. Sign on support for the Retired Bishop's Statement yourself
We are the church together-laity, pastors, and bishops!

The Statement of Counsel to the Church-2011 by 33 retired bishops encouraged many of us.  The now 36 signers welcome others to join them who share their concern.  Bishops, active and retired, can add their name to the list by contacting Bishop Don Ott.

As we celebrate the clarity with which the Statement demands removal of anti-gay ordination policy, we also know that many active bishops also share in this commitment due to direct experience with qualified, gifted, called lesbian and gay clergy.

Please take action! Visit our eAction page to send a message to your active bishop now!  If you are clergy or lay and want to add your support to the Retired Bishops Statement you can do so by checking the box on the form that says, "I want to publicly declare my support." Once you are finished you will have the opportunity to send a message to your local Pastor and to invite a friend to take action.
