that happens over and over again in our lives.
Rev. Vernice Thorn

October 11th is "Coming Out" day. As a counselor and one who sits with people to hear their stories, even as I tell my own, I believe coming out is a spiritual event that happens over and over again in our lives.
I am thankful for my gay sisters and brothers for claiming that phrase as an experience of authenticity. I hear it as a public declaration of our God given identity; an identity that God claims as good. And so this day gives us an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the gift of identity that God has blessed us to be. We are each made in God's image - that means gay, straight, lesbian, asexual, bisexual, black, brown, red, yellow, white, gender fluid, transgender, documented, undocumented, female, male...however we name ourselves God claims each of us as God's own.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where barriers often divide us by identity - and as a result we spend so much of our time and energy trying to visualize ourselves as wonderfully made and loved. That is why the need to come out and continue to come out is necessary. CWACM is a movement which provides safe space and community to live out a justice that says all of God's people are valued and valuable. I don't always feel that self-worth. So places like CWACM gives me the courage to confront and "come out" of those places of fear and self-hatred that I have ingested into my soul.
I have a vivid memory that is as fresh in my minds eye as though it happened yesterday. little black child
I was about six years old and was standing in the bathroom looking in the only mirror in the house.  I had this perplexed look on my face as I stared at myself.  I was thinking, something's wrong with the way I look.  My Barbie doll looks different. The people on the TV set look different. What's wrong with me? That image and that question have plagued me all my life. My family did not discuss race.  Our difference was neither acknowledged nor affirmed.  What I know now is without affirmation difference becomes "not normal." Beneath my quest for justice is a desire to be seen as "normal"; to not live in a reality where my difference makes me an outsider. That longing continues to influence the justice and inclusive ministry that is my life's work.
As we commemorate "coming out", I would request that each of us ask ourselves where are the places of fear that keep us locked up tight, those places that hinder wholeness? Is it our sexual orientation? Is it our ethnicity or skin color? (for those of us who have dark skin, there are still ways to be closeted around our identity) Is it our mental illness, or physical illness?  Is it our spiritual ambiguity?  Is it a relational or familial connection we would just soon no one know about? Is it an addiction we keep silent about, because of the mere shame of it?  Is it some type of abuse we are experiencing? Whatever painful circumstance we are keeping locked away, I offer this prayer for us.
You, who open doors and dismantle barriers, help us to remember who we have been created to be. Open those closet doors that we might live a full and fulfilling life. Heal the wounds of exclusion and silence that we have experienced so that we can live as faithful neighbors, recognizing the spirit of love in each other. Open our hearts to the transforming power of that love so we can forgive and reconcile, so that we can make peace and live peace in the world. Amen.

MFSA Voting Guide

We have been given the gift of democracy through the hard efforts of our national founding fathers and the generations of Americans since then. We sometimes get complacent with this gift because it has always been there for us. However, if we are to be stewards of the gifts given to us we must take the responsibilities of democracy seriously. Always vote.

All of us are profoundly affected by who takes office. We are affected by who is president, by who sits in the Senate, House of Representatives, state legislatures, local and state courts, city government, and school board. Always vote.

Some think that all politicians are crooks and it doesn't matter which party gets the vote. There are days I might agree with you. But the candidates for any office are never identical. Vote for the better candidate if you can. Vote for the less worse if that is all there is. Always vote.

I've seen Christian voter guides that rate candidates based on some criteria. This isn't one. I won't tell you who to vote for. I won't tell you who I'm voting for. Instead, I'll describe what principles - Christian principles - that guide my decisions. They aren't what one normally sees in Christian voter guides. These are some of the things I look for:

Does the candidate stress cooperation, a sense that we're all in this together, that we are responsible for each other? I will choose that person over one who shouts fear of the other.

Does the candidate have compassion for the poor and look for ways to help the less fortunate improve their circumstances?

* We have inherited a vast array of jointly owned property and institutions, from national parks, roads and highways, water and sewer works to libraries, hospitals, schools and universities, museums and concert halls, and public services willing to help anyone who needs it. Is the candidate willing to maintain and improve our shared resources or let it crumble into dust?

Does the candidate talk about how taxes maintain our jointly owned property; fully fund the education of everyone - including the poor; pay police, firefighters and teachers a respectable salary; and provide a public safety net? Does he or she mention responsibility along with freedom? Or does the candidate insist that any tax is offensive?

Does the candidate look for ways to protect the average person from the greed and recklessness of the powerful?

Does the candidate consider the health of all, including the poor? I will choose that person over one who only considers what profits can be made through the health care industry.

Does the candidate look for ways to protect and improve the health of the environment?

Does the candidate value science or dismiss it?

If the candidate talks of the unborn, does he or she also talk about quality of life after birth

Google has a team that creates new logos for special occasions. The company refers to these logos as "doodles <http://www.google.com/doodles/finder/2012/All%20doodles> ." Decisions to tailor the company's logo are influenced by public input (that's you!). As Google remains the most visited website in the U.S., these eye-catching doodles can be incredibly far-reaching and impactful.

With World AIDS Day approaching December 1, we encourage you to send an e-mail now and ask others to help, as well!  Email proposals@google.com and copy daniel.w.beck@state.or.us. You can use or adapt the email below.

Subject:  Doodle Request for World AIDS Day (12/1)

Dear Google:

I'm writing to request that Google create a doodle for World AIDS Day (December 1).  It is estimated that approximately 34 million people are living with HIV worldwide, and more than one million are in the United States.  Given the devastating impact of the epidemic, it is disheartening to know that the American public's sense of urgency about HIV has diminished.  A Kaiser Family Foundation study found that the proportion of people in the U.S. who report having seen, heard, or read about HIV in the past year declined from seven in ten in 2004 to only four in ten in 2011.  With your help, we can change that!

Thank you for your consideration and for your prior contributions to HIV prevention and treatment.

Sincerely,

(your name)
